Derby are targeting promotion this season, but despite an unbeaten run in September and October they failed to get into the top six.

The Rams have only managed to win back-to-back games once in the league this season so far and they have received criticism for their inconsistent form.

Derby are set to start their FA Cup journey against Crewe Alexandra this weekend and Warne admitted that he wants to play league games to stitch together back-to-back wins to get into the top six.

Warne pointed out that Derby came close to getting into the top six several times and compared their inconsistent form with the game of snakes and ladders.

“I would rather play in the league, obviously”, Warne told Rams TV.

“We just need to get some back-to-back wins and just get into that top six and see where it takes us, which is just sort of on the periphery, and every time we feel like we are getting close, it is like snakes and ladders; we seem to fall down.”

Derby will take on Crewe Alexandra and Wolves Under-21s in back-to-back cup ties before they resume their League One campaign against Barnsley.
