The 22-year-old is a product of Derby’s academy, but the Rams let Whittaker leave in 2021 to join Swansea City.

Whittaker made 37 appearances for the Swans before he was sold to Plymouth last summer after a good loan spell with the Pilgrims last season.

Clarke believes that the former Derby star, who has scored eight goals in 17 games, is in excellent form this season and stressed his view that Whittaker can play in the Premier League in the future.

The ex-EFL star is of the opinion that Whittaker is proving Derby and Swansea badly wrong on their decision to let him leave with his performances this season.

“Morgan Whittaker has scored five goals now from outside the box this season; the only player in English football who has scored more left-footed goals than him is Erling Haaland”, Clarke said on the What the EFL podcast.

“This kid is on fire at the moment.

“Swansea could not get him in their team, Derby let him go and he is in the process of proving those two clubs badly wrong is he not?

“Morgan Whittaker to me talent wise he looks like someone that can go up again, someone that could potentially go and play in the top flight.

“He is still young enough to get an opportunity to do that.

“He has real quality.”

Whittaker made a total of 32 appearances for Derby during his time at Pride Park before the Rams let him go to Swansea.

The winger then drew interest from Rangers while at Swansea, but ultimately joined Plymouth last summer.

Time will tell if Derby and Swansea regret their respective decisions to let Whittaker leave.
