Nick Pope has picked up an injury and will not be returning to action for Newcastle until towards the end of the season in April.

Martin Dubravka is expected to deputise in place of their regular number one but there are suggestions that the club could look to bring in a new goalkeeper in the winter window.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to the North East of England and the former Manchester United number one is available on a free transfer.

Newcastle have not made up their mind about wanting a new goalkeeper but will continue to monitor the Spaniard if they decide to sign one.

De Gea is said to be prepared to consider an offer from Newcastle if they make a move for him.

However, his wage demands are likely to be problematic for Newcastle if they decide to try and sign him.

The Spaniard made 545 appearances for Manchester United over 12 years before he was released at the end of last season.
