The Villans humbled defending champions Manchester City at home on Wednesday night in what was a superb performance against the champions.

It helped maintain Aston Villa’s perfect form at home this season, with Villa Park now established as a fortress.

Robinson, while highlighting the need for Aston Villa’s away form to improve, insisted that they are serious top-four challengers this season.

“Villa are definitely top four contenders now”, Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 live.

“You look at the way they are playing at home especially, scoring goals, defensively organised.

“Perhaps away from home they can improve, they have had a few indifferent results.

“Maybe the squad is a little light but they are getting the results.”

Robinson thinks that Emery, who was sacked by Arsenal, is acting as if he has unfinished business in English football.

“Unai Emery is getting a lot of plaudits, and rightly so.

“He seemed to have a feeling of unfinished business after his time at Arsenal.

“You look at his CV and what he achieved since that spell and now with Villa, he is a top-quality coach getting his just rewards.”

Ahead of their eighth home game of the season against leaders Arsenal, Aston Villa have built up a five-point lead over fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand.
