The 27-year-old right-winger joined Portsmouth in the summer from Cardiff City on a free transfer, but since his arrival, he has failed to impress.

On Monday, Whyte came on as a substitute and assisted the 88th-minute goal of Kusini Yengi to seal three points against Bolton Wanderers in a crucial game.

Mousinho admitted that Monday’s display has been the best they have seen from Whyte in Portsmouth colours and believes that it is nice for the Pompey faithful to see what the winger is capable of.

The Portsmouth boss added that Whyte is aware that the squad have immense faith in him and stressed that the Northern Ireland international will become an important player for them in the future.

When asked about Whyte’s performance, Mousinho told Portsmouth’s media: “It is probably the best we have seen of Gavin in a short time so far.

“I know he is capable of that.

“Gavin knows that he is loved here and we have a huge amount of faith in him.

“We know he is going to become a really important player for us this season and beyond.

“He came in, had an impact, obviously set the goal up, and showed some quality.

“I know all about Gavin; I played with him many years ago and I have seen him over the years and nice for the fans to see some of that as well.”

Portsmouth are set to take on Shrewsbury Town at the weekend and Whyte will be eager to get into the starting line-up for the game.
