Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are both monitoring Japan defender Ko Itakura, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Itakura is on the books at German Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, who he joined from Manchester City in the summer of 2022.

The defender has impressed at Gladbach, building on successful loan spells at FC Groningen and Schalke.

He is now being monitored, with Liverpool sending scouts to watch him on several occasions, while Tottenham are also looking.

Itakura is a player that Ange Postecoglou was keen to take to Scotland during his time as Celtic boss.

Any move for Itakura may not come this month though as the release clause in his Gladbach contract is not valid for the winter window.

Nevertheless, the prospect of a move to the Premier League could be something which appeals to the experienced Japan international.

If Itakura headed to Liverpool then he would link up with Japan team-mate Wataru Endo, who swapped the Bundesliga for the Premier League last summer.
