Stephen Elliott has warned that it would be a big loss for Sunderland if Liverpool target Dan Neil leaves the Stadium of Light.

The 22-year-old midfielder is in brilliant form this season and he has featured 25 times in the league for Sunderland in the ongoing campaign, racking up four goals and three assists in the process.

Liverpool showed interest in Neil last summer and it has been suggested that the Reds have retained their interest in the Sunderland star with the hope of securing a deal for the midfielder in the ongoing window.

Elliott believes that Neil has the physical edge that all top midfielders require and stressed that the Liverpool-linked star is more than capable of playing at the top level.

He also pointed out that the midfielder has been a consistent performer for the Black Cats and stated that it would be a big loss for Sunderland if Neil leaves the Wearsiders.

“If SAFC lost Dan Neil, it would be a huge miss for the team”, Elliott wrote on X, reacting to the transfer talk.

“He’s been consistently a top performer over the past 12 months.

“Improving all the time and has added a real physical edge that all top midfielders need.

“Love watching him play.

“More than capable of playing at the top level.”

Neil has a contract with Sunderland that expires at the end of June 2026 and now it remains to be seen whether the Black Cats will receive a bid from Liverpool for the midfielder’s signature.

Liverpool found success in signing another midfielder from Sunderland when they scooped up Jordan Henderson.
