Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has refused to be drawn into speculation regarding Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips’ future, insisting that the midfielder has been out of training for the last five days after falling sick.

Phillips has been on the fringes at the Etihad Stadium and is seeking a move away to play regular football to improve his chances of making it to the England squad for Euro 2024.

A number of clubs have been linked with moves for the 28-year-old, particularly Newcastle United, though nothing has materialised yet.

He is out of favour under Guardiola at Manchester City and the manager insists he is not sure what the future holds for Phillips.

Guardiola also revealed that the midfielder has been unable to train of late.

“I don’t know”, Guardiola said at a press conference when asked about Phillips’ future.

“He has been sick for the last five days, so he couldn’t train.

“I am not going to anticipate anything.”

Manchester City are claimed to be looking for a substantial loan fee for a player also wanted by Italian giants Juventus.
