Derby County have work to do on the capture of Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday due to his wages, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Rams want to land Smith to bolster their attacking options and the switch has been tipped to go through this month.

Wednesday have been reluctant to allow Smith to leave before bringing in a replacement, but having done so are expected to sanction his departure.

However, it is claimed that Derby still need to do work to get the deal over the line.

The striker is on big wages at Hillsborough and it remains to be seen how the Rams tackle the situation.

Smith is not in Danny Rohl’s plans though and if he remains at Sheffield Wednesday he faces a second half of the season of limited game time.

The 32-year-old has featured just once in the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday since early December.

Smith knows where the goal is in League One and has struck no fewer than 75 times in the third tier.
