Newcastle United have made no progress on a possible swoop for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to the Daily Mail.

The Magpies have just been stunned by an injury blow to midfielder Joelinton, who is now tipped to miss the rest of the season.

It is a bitter pill to swallow for Newcastle, who have already been dealing with a host of injury issues.

Joelinton’s groin injury also makes signing another midfielder even more of a priority for the Magpies this month.

Manchester City midfielder Phillips is someone Newcastle would like to sign, but the Cityzens want a substantial loan fee.

And Newcastle have made no progress towards taking Phillips to St James’ Park.

A switch for the England midfielder to the north east still appears to be in doubt.

Newcastle have explored other midfield options and may find more joy elsewhere when it comes to bringing in a fresh face.
