Birmingham City are in the race to sign Sunderland target Callum Styles but are battling financial issues in the ongoing window, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 23-year-old midfielder’s future at Barnsley has come under the scanner due to interest from Sunderland.

Michael Beale is pushing to bring in a midfielder and Sunderland have made an offer to sign the midfielder on loan with an obligation to buy from the League One club.

However, Styles has more suitors in the Championship after he impressed on loan at Millwall last season.

It has been claimed that Birmingham are also interested in getting their hands on the Barnsley midfielder.

Tony Mowbray is an admirer of the player and wants to beat his former club Sunderland to his signature.

However, Blues could find it hard to compete as they are battling financial issues in the ongoing window.

Birmingham also have fall-back options if they miss out on the signature of Styles in the coming days.
