Eddie Howe has claimed that Kieran Trippier has never asked to leave Newcastle United despite persistent interest from Bayern Munich.

Newcastle came under incessant pressure to sell Trippier due to interest from the German champions in the ongoing winter transfer window.

The Magpies rejected two offers from the Bavarians for the defender and Bayern Munich eventually decided against pursuing the 33-year-old’s signature late in the window.

There were suggestions that Trippier was open to the move if Newcastle were prepared to sell but Howe insisted that the player never even suggested that he wanted to leave.

He stressed that he had several conversations with the defender and Trippier’s commitment to Newcastle is under no doubt despite the rumours around his future.

The Newcastle manager said in a press conference: “He has never asked to leave or even questioned his future here.

“He’s always been fully committed.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations in the last week and it’s always been about Newcastle…his commitment shouldn’t be questioned.”

Trippier was the first major signing of the new era at Newcastle and Howe has never been keen to sell him.

Newcastle do need sales this month in order to bring in new faces for Howe’s squad.
