Barry Ferguson believes that Rangers star Cyriel Dessers could have left on loan after a disappointing start to his Gers career and hailed the forward for his mentality to not give up.
The 29-year-old forward joined Rangers in the summer from Cremonese, but failed to get going under his previous boss, Michael Beale.
However, under Philippe Clement, Dessers has managed to find his shooting boots, as he has scored six times while assisting three goals in eleven league outings.
Ferguson pointed out that Dessers could have sought out a move elsewhere after receiving huge stick from the Gers faithful and former players due to his slow start to his Rangers career.
He praised the forward for not giving up on his Gers career and showing the mentality to dig in to turn his situation around.
“After some of the stick he’s had to endure over the first few months of the season, it might have been easier for him to skulk away and think about playing his football somewhere else to give himself a bit of an easier ride”, Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column.
“When Clement came in he could have asked the new manager for a quiet word and asked to be allowed to leave on loan.
“But while that turned out to the best solution for Sam Lammers – who had a similarly difficult start to his Rangers career – Dessers simply doesn’t look like a man who is prepared to give this club up just so easily.”
“To his credit, he’s dug in and stood his ground.”
Dessers has managed to bag eleven goals and seven assists in all competitions for Rangers so far this season.
