VfB Stuttgart have decided against trying to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate, who is also a Sheffield United target.

The 27-year-old defender is currently out on loan at Southampton from Everton but has not played a league game since November.

Everton are prepared to cut short his loan at the St. Mary’s if they can find a new club for him but for the moment, no deal is imminent.

Sheffield United are interested in getting their hands on him and he has even attracted interest from Germany.

Stuttgart made an approach for him on Wednesday but according to Sky Deutschland, a deal will not be happening.

Following internal discussions, the Bundesliga club have decided against trying to sign Holgate.

The Everton defender is not a player they are likely to pursue on the final day of the transfer window.

It remains to be seen whether Holgate finds a new club before the transfer window slams shut tonight.

Southampton are ready to let the player go given the fact he is not a player Russell Martin has been counting upon.
