Nottingham Forest are set to face disappointment in their pursuit of Ajax striker Chuba Akpom on transfer deadline day.

Nottingham Forest have made a late but concerted effort to try and sign Akpom on the final day of the winter transfer window.

Ajax rejected a loan plus option to buy offer worth €15m from the Midlands club earlier in the day and made a counter-offer.

The Dutch champions wanted Forest to up their offer to €17m and wanted an obligation to buy, even if they got relegated from the Premier League.

Forest did not agree to those terms despite still trying to work on a deal to sign Akpom but, according to Dutch magazine Voetbal International, a deal seems unlikely at the moment.

The striker has been pushing for a move to the City Ground but he is set to stay at Ajax as things stand.

There is not enough time left in the window for the two clubs to reach an agreement and for all the potential paperwork to be sorted out.

For now, it seems unlikely that Nottingham Forest will manage to sign Akpom from Ajax in the final hours of the transfer window.
