Real Sociedad held secret talks with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Bryan Gil on loan in the winter transfer window, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Gil is struggling to command regular game time at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou and was heavily linked with leaving the club in the window.

As the deadline approached, Brighton tried to get a deal done to snap Gil up, but he turned down a move to the Seagulls.

The winger also rejected a proposed switch to Dutch side Feyenoord.

Now it has emerged that Real Sociedad held secret talks with Tottenham to try to sign Gil themselves.

The talks though did not lead to an agreement as Real Sociedad could not make it work along with their financial parameters.

Gil will now knuckle down at Tottenham and try to get as much playing time as possible over the course of the second half of the season.

The winger was given a brief cameo during Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.
