Former Scotland star Steven Thompson has insisted that Neil Warnock will take a lot from Aberdeen’s defeat at Rangers on Tuesday night.

Aberdeen pushed Rangers hard at Ibrox and the home side only edged the game 2-1 despite dominating large parts of the proceedings.

Philippe Clement’s side played the last few minutes with ten men as Dujon Sterling was sent off in the 88th minute and the away side came close to scoring a late equaliser as well.

Thompson insisted that despite the defeat, Aberdeen were solid and there are a lot of positives from the game that Warnock can take from the performance of his team at Ibrox.

However, he stressed that Rangers still deserved the three points due to the character and determination they showed to win the game.

The former Rangers star said on BBC Radio Scotland: “I don’t think it was a bad Aberdeen performance.

“I think Aberdeen can take a lot from the game and I think Neil Warnock will take a lot from the game.

“But you can’t say Rangers didn’t deserve all three points tonight and they again, showed a lot of character.”

Rangers remained second in the league table on goal difference but are now level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings.
