Manchester United look set to go head-to-head with Chelsea for Brighton’s head of recruitment Sam Jewell, who is being eyed to head the Red Devils’ scouting operations by Dan Ashworth, according to ESPN.

Manchester United are set to enter formal talks with Newcastle soon to agree on a deal to bring in Ashworth as their new sporting director.

The 52-year-old would have to spend time on gardening leave and compensation would have to be agreed before he could assume his role at Old Trafford.

Ashworth is keen on the job and is already working on bringing in some trusted lieutenants to Manchester United.

It has been claimed that he wants to raid his former side Brighton and snare Jewell away from the Amex Stadium.

The 34-year-old has been the head of recruitment at Brighton since November 2022 and was previously a youth scout at the club.

Jewell worked under Ashworth at Brighton and the latter wants him at Old Trafford to head their scouting operations.

However, Manchester United look set to face competition from Chelsea, who are pushing to take him to Stamford Bridge as well.

Chelsea admire Jewell and have made an offer to take him to Stamford Bridge, which is their second attempt to do so.

Manchester United will hope that Ashworth will tilt the balance towards Jewell moving to Old Trafford over west London.
