Southampton boss Russell Martin has claimed that his side will look to use their disappointment at the weekend and react in a positive way in their game against Leicester City on Tuesday night.

Saints’ faint hopes of automatic promotion were further dented with a 2-1 defeat at Cardiff City on Saturday.

Southampton are guaranteed to finish in the playoff spots but are five points off the automatic promotion spots with three Championship games left in the season.

Martin conceded that he understands the frustration Southampton players and fans felt after they conceded a late winner to Cardiff at the weekend.

However, he is now keen to see a reaction from his team against Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Southampton boss said in a press conference: “I get the frustration of the result, I am sure there will be loads of negativity because we got close but didn’t get the result we needed.

“Now, we need to react and go and win tomorrow.

“The end goal doesn’t change.”

He insisted that his team cannot bother with Leicester’s situation but admitted that Enzo Maresca has done a fine job in a difficult league such as the Championship.

However, Martin wants the game to be about his team and see what kind of result they can get against the Championship leaders.

“Their situation is not a focus for us, we will focus on ourselves.

“Enzo Maresca has done a great job but it’s not easy in this division.

“We will try and make the game about us and see where it takes us.”
