Cheltenham Town boss Darrell Clarke is close to taking the job of Barnsley boss.

Clarke could not keep Cheltenham afloat in League One this season and has been holding talks with the club about staying.

The ambitious boss was keen to lead Cheltenham straight back up to League One, but talks over a new deal have now broken down.

And Clarke is close to agreeing to become the new Barnsley manager, according to journalist Jon Palmer.

The Oakwell outfit are on the hunt for a new manager as they plot a promotion winning campaign.

Clarke appears to have been sold on the Barnsley job and the club’s ambition and is close to taking charge.

The 46-year-old had stints in charge of Salisbury City, Bristol Rovers, Walsall and Port Vale, prior to taking the Cheltenham job.

Barnsley will represent Clarke’s biggest step up and the manager will be hoping he can succeed in masterminding a promotion push in League One.
