Besiktas ‘took a step back’ on their pursuit of Paul Onuachu after learning Southampton’s asking price, but may go back for him when they appoint a new boss.

Onuachu, who joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan from Southampton in the summer, impressed with his performances in Turkey.

The 30-year-old forward is not in Southampton’s plans for next season and they are looking for a permanent exit for the striker.

Trabzonspor want to keep him at the club, but they are only in favour of another loan move in the summer.

However, they are not the only Turkish side interested in Onuachu, as Besiktas are also admirers of the powerful striker.

According to Turkish daily Takvim (via A Spor), Besiktas got in touch with Southampton and were quoted €15m for Onuachu.

The Black Eagles then ‘took a step back’ due to the price tag, which they are not keen to pay.

However, Besiktas have not completely abandoned the idea of signing the striker.

It is suggested they may go back in for him dependent upon the thoughts of their new coach, who has not yet been appointed.
