Real Sociedad have told Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi would have to trigger his own release clause if he is to leave the club this summer, according to The Times.
Zubimendi has been contemplating whether to leave Real Sociedad this summer due to serious interest from Liverpool.
The midfielder has not given his final approval to the Reds and is reportedly in a ‘sea of doubt’ about whether to move to Merseyside in the ongoing transfer window.
La Real have been trying to convince the midfielder to stay at the club and have no interest in negotiating his €60m release clause.
It has been claimed that Sociedad have now cranked up the pressure on Zubimendi to push him to continue at the Anoeta.
Sociedad have made it clear to the player that he would have to himself trigger the clause if he wants to leave.
The Spaniard would have to submit the release clause figure in La Liga’s offices himself to get out of the contract.
The Spanish club have taken a hardline stance and wants the player to take the initiative if he wants to leave.
It remains to be seen whether Zubimendi is prepared to take that nuclear option to move on from Sociedad.
