Manchester United’s late entry into the transfer mix for Chelsea target Ivan Toney has fuelled Brentford’s desire for a bidding war ahead of the end of the transfer window, according to the Evening Standard.

Toney has agreed personal terms with Saudi outfit Al-Ahli but interest from Chelsea has turned the transfer saga up a notch ahead of Friday’s deadline.

The Blues are interested in taking the forward to Stamford Bridge as part of their plans to sign a reliable goalscorer.

However, it has been claimed Manchester United are pondering over rivalling Chelsea for the signature of the England international.

Erik ten Hag would prefer to sign one more forward and Toney’s name is being discussed in recruitment meetings at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are yet to table a formal offer but preliminary talks have taken place with Brentford.

The London club are keen to get a bidding war going before the window closes on Friday night.

For the moment, no club are prepared to match Brentford’s £50m asking price for Toney.

However, a bidding war could see them bag somewhere around £40m from the sale of the attacker.
