Derby County are keen on an experienced free agent, but are facing competition from an unnamed Championship side to land him, according to journalist Darren Witcoop.
Paul Warne is finalising his squad ahead of the closure of the summer transfer window, but he will still be able to sign free agents.
That could suit the Rams in that their interest in a defender who is a free agent is not restricted by the window shutting.
Former Leeds United centre-back Liam Cooper is the player Warne wants and Derby are in the running to take him to Pride Park.
Hull City boss Tim Walter has been keen on adding Cooper to his ranks but a move eventually fell through.
Derby though will not have a free run at Cooper.
Another Championship side are also in the mix to try to land the centre-back.
Leeds offered Cooper a new contract to stay at Elland Road, but the defender did not like the terms on the table and departed the Whites.
