Newcastle United are growing pessimistic about their chances of landing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi with little over a day left in the transfer window, according to the Guardian.

Guehi has been the top target for Newcastle this summer as they seek to improve their centre-back options.

However, negotiations with Crystal Palace have been far more complicated than the Newcastle hierarchy envisaged.

Palace have refused to budge from their £70m asking price with Newcastle’s last offer being at the £65m mark with add-ons.

It has been claimed that with less than 36 hours left in the window, Guehi is now unlikely to end up at Newcastle.

The defender has been keen on the move but Newcastle have failed to come up with an offer to convince Crystal Palace.

There is now growing pessimism at Newcastle that they will be able to sign the England international.

Palace are said to be demanding a large chunk of the fee upfront without too many add-ons associated with the deal.
