Southampton are close to agreeing a deal with West Ham United to land Maxwel Cornet, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Saints are on a mission to boost Russell Martin’s attacking third options before the transfer window closes on Friday evening.

They are now moving to try to bring in winger Cornet, a player who West Ham are happy to move on this summer.

Saints have almost agreed a deal with West Ham which would see Cornet move to St Mary’s on a season-long loan.

Cornet struggled for regular game time under David Moyes and his prospects under Julen Lopetegui look unlikely to improve.

It is unclear if Southampton will have any option in the loan agreement to sign Cornet on a permanent basis should he impress on the south coast.

They will be looking to now push the deal through quickly, with the transfer window shutting on Friday night.

Cornet has not featured for West Ham this season and played just 16 games for the Hammers over the course of last season.
