Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah is currently undergoing his medical at Saint-Etienne and the French side will have an option to buy included in the agreement.

Ekwah is in the process of completing a season-long loan switch to Saint-Etienne from Championship side Sunderland.

He is currently in France and is being put through his medical paces by the Ligue 1 club.

The move will be a loan, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, but Saint-Etienne have an option to sign Ekwah permanently at the end of it.

That permanent transfer fee will be set at a number under €7m.

Ekwah will be looking to come through the medical tests at Saint-Etienne and complete a move back to his native France.

He spent time in the youth ranks at Chelsea and West Ham after arriving in England from Nantes and joined Sunderland in 2023.

The Black Cats will keep a close eye on how the midfielder does in France and whether Saint-Etienne will trigger the purchase option.
