Ex-Premier League boss Sam Allardyce feels that West Ham United were able to sign a player this summer only due to his club’s ‘absolutely bizarre’ decision to sell him.
West Ham did substantial transfer business over the summer as Julen Lopetegui was backed, with the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Jean-Clair Todibo, Guido Rodriguez and Aaron Wan-Bissaka coming in.
Full-back Wan-Bissaka joined West Ham from Manchester United, putting an end to his five-year tenure at Old Trafford.
Allardyce feels that the Red Devils sold Wan-Bissaka because they feel Diogo Dalot is a better player in terms of attacking.
The former Premier League manager insisted that Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag should have kept Wan-Bissaka as he feels that if Ten Hag wants to win something, he needs a rock-solid defence.
And he reiterated that Manchester United’s decision to let Wan-Bissaka leave for West Ham was ‘absolutely bizarre’.
“The only reason I can see why Manchester United let him [Wan-Bissaka] go is, maybe because he is not as good as Dalot attacking [wise]”, Allardyce told No Tippy Tappy Football about the 26-year-old defender.
“And personally, I find that absolutely bizarre.
“Because everybody knows, obviously Ten Hag does not know, the only way you win something is when you have got the best defensive record in the league.
“Obviously you will need to score the goals to go with it, but if you have got the best defensive record in the league you need less goals to win it than you would if you do not have the best defence.”
Allardyce also stressed that the London club got a very good deal with their capture of Wan-Bissaka.
“I found that to be a very good piece of business by West Ham.”
Wan-Bissaka will be looking to keep his starting spot in Julen Lopetegui’s side when they face Fulham this weekend.
