Former Liverpool star John Aldridge has claimed that in terms of a squad player in defence, there is hardly anyone better than Reds star Joe Gomez in the Premier League.
The 27-year-old defender has played a bit-part role in Liverpool’s defence and in the summer, Gomez came close to leaving the Anfield outfit.
At the weekend, Gomez made his first start in the league this season against Manchester City in the absence of Ibrahim Konate and helped his team to keep a clean sheet while securing a 2-0 victory.
Aldridge, who was impressed by the Liverpool defender’s performance, believes that Gomez can feature anywhere in the defensive line and pointed out that he has played as a holding midfielder in the past as well.
He also claimed that he is doubtful that there exists hardly a better defensive squad player in the league than Gomez.
“Joe can play anywhere across the back, and has done holding midfield in the past too”, Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“He’s been absolutely brilliant.
“As a squad player, defensively, there is hardly anyone better in the league.
“It’s just as well too, because losing Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley to injury is a huge blow.
“But we showed against Man City that we have the team and squad to cope.”
Gomez has featured nine times for Liverpool in all competitions so far this season and Slot will be hoping that he will be able to step up whenever the team need him this season.
