Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is delighted with the dedication shown by Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakho in order to push themselves back to full fitness.

Each has had a spell out through injury, but have now completed their recovery work to put themselves back in contention for a spot in Rodgers' matchday squad ahead of the visit to Manchester United on Sunday.

And the manager is delighted with the application shown by the French defender and Brazilian midfielder, explaining that they had an opportunity to take time off but chose to play in an Under-21 game instead, playing against West Ham last Friday.

"It's a great credit to them; when I gave players time off, they actually wanted to stay behind", Rodgers said via LFC TV.

"It shows you the commitment of this squad. They had an opportunity to have a break, they'd been working very, very hard with the medical team, but they decided to stay and last Friday they travelled down themselves in a car to London to play in an U21 game.

"Both came through that fine and they've trained very well this week. They come into the squad and we're only got Jose Enrique missing.

"Lucas and Mamadou have got great commitment to what we're doing and we'll welcome them back into the squad."
