Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen is of the opinion that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is the reason behind the gaping points difference between the teams.

Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League standings with 56 points from 31 games, nine points and three places adrift of the Reds, who have a game in hand.

Liverpool could be 12 points clear of Tim Sherwood’s side ahead of their meeting at the weekend if the Merseyside club manage to come out victorious against relegation-threatened Sunderland tomorrow.

And Vertonghen believes that his former Ajax team-mate Suarez, who is the league’s top scorer with 28 goals to his name, is one of the best strikers in the world.

The Belgian international also lauded Daniel Sturridge, who has proved to be an ideal foil for Suarez by scoring 19 Premier League goals himself this season.

"Suarez, Suarez is the reason for that [the points difference between the clubs]”, he told ITV.

"At the moment he is up there as one of the best strikers in the world.

"I think he is the difference between the teams.

“Sturridge obviously is doing well and those two are very hard to stop."
