Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood is the strong favourite to take over at Aston Villa following the sacking of Paul Lambert.

Villa pulled the trigger on Lambert last night after a midweek defeat to Hull City sent the side dropping into the Premier League's relegation zone.

Sherwood, who left Spurs last summer to be replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, has been installed as the heavy favourite for the job, with bookmakers quoting odds as low as 1.5 (1/2) for the former midfielder to take over at Villa Park.

He had been strongly linked with the vacant QPR job, but has fallen out of the running at Loftus Road.

Second favourite for the post is another former Tottenham manager in the shape of Glenn Hoddle. Most recently employed as a part time coach with QPR, Hoddle is also a free agent.

Further back in the betting are former Swansea boss Michael Laudrup, current Derby County manager Steve McClaren and United States national team boss Jurgen Klinsmann.

Aston Villa are next in action this weekend when they take on Leicester City in an FA Cup clash on Sunday.

They then return to Premier League action the following weekend with a visit from Stoke City.
