Kevin De Bruyne admits that moving to Chelsea was not one of his brighter career choices and feels if his transfer fee had been higher he would have received more opportunities at Stamford Bridge.

The playmaker joined Chelsea from Genk in January 2012 and was immediately loaned back to the Belgian outfit for the rest of the season.

He joined Werder Bremen on loan until the end of the 2012/13 season in the summer of 2012 and was impressive in the Bundesliga before he rejoined his parent club in June 2013.

However, he had a miserable time at Chelsea and after making just nine appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side, he permanently moved to Wolfsburg in January last year for a transfer fee of £18m.

The Belgian has found success at Wolfsburg and is one of the most consistent performers in Germany’s top flight, with eight goals and 12 assists in 22 league appearances this season.

Reflecting on why his move to Chelsea didn’t work out, De Bruyne admits that joining the Blues was not a great idea and said that manager Jose Mourinho never communicated to him as to why he was being consistently overlooked for selection.

“The decision to move to Chelsea was not the best”, De Bruyne told Sport Bild.

“The club are a different world and Mourinho never told me why I was not playing.”

The Belgian believes that if Chelsea had paid a higher transfer fee for him then he would have been taken much more seriously at Stamford Bridge and would have received more opportunities.

“Maybe it would have all gone differently if Chelsea had paid €45m for me instead of €8m”, De Bruyne added.

“I might have received more consideration if my transfer fee was higher.”
