Chelsea have opened talks with Zenit Saint Petersburg for the signature of Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay, it has been claimed.

An unimpressive start to the season has prompted Jose Mourinho to make more additions to his squad and he signed Baba Rahman and Pedro Rodriguez last week to show Chelsea’s urgency in the final stretch of the transfer window.

However, Chelsea’s leaky defence, which has conceded seven goals in the first three league games, is still a cause for concern and Mourinho is looking to bring in a new defender before the window closes a week from today.

The Chelsea boss is claimed to have identified Zenit defender Garay as the man for the job and according to Italian broadcaster Sky Italia, the Blues are in talks with the Russian outfit for his signature.

With only a week left in the window, Chelsea are in a hurry to push though an agreement and are confident that they will be able to agree a deal for the 28-year-old defender.

The Argentina defender joined Zenit from Benfica last summer and was one of their key men in their league title winning campaign under Andre Villas-Boas.

Garay has also earned 31 caps for Argentina and played a major role in their run to the World Cup and Copa America finals.

Spanish giants Valencia and Serie A runners-up Roma have also been linked with the central defender.
