West Ham United striker Andy Carroll has revealed that Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was his childhood hero.

The former England captain is a cult hero on Tyneside and is the club’s top goalscorer with 206 strikes. Shearer also won the Premier League title with Blackburn and is the league’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals.

Carroll started his career with his boyhood club Newcastle United, before moving to Liverpool in the summer of 2011. The West Ham forward revealed that Shearer was his boyhood hero and he idolised the former England striker.

He admits that for a Newcastle boy, Shearer was the gold standard for strikers and indicated idolising the former England man was an easy decision to make.

When asked who his first football hero was, the West Ham forward told the club's official website: “Alan Shearer.
