Arjen Robben feels that the emphasis is on Memphis Depay to ensure he emerges from a difficult period in his career to fulfil his potential.

Netherlands international Depay is under the microscope following a period of poor form at club level with Manchester United, where he is struggling to get into the team.

The winger enjoyed a bright start to life in England following his move from PSV Eindhoven in the summer, but has lately found the going much tougher.

Robben feels that while he can give Depay advice, ultimately it is up to the player himself to show the mentality to emerge stronger from a difficult period.

The Dutchman said at a press conference: "Memphis is a great talent, he's a talented player – maybe now in a very difficult situation.

"Of course you can give him some advice, but I think that in the end the player himself has to cope with it.

"You have to show strength, to show the right mentality too. Also in your development as a player I think it's very important."

Robben remains full of hope for Depay, who has been mooted as the Bayern Munich man's natural successor with the Netherlands, and stressed that the winger still has his entire career ahead of him.

"It's not always sunshine, sometimes you go through difficult periods, especially if you're young – and he's still young.

"He has a long way ahead of him and I think if he shows the right mentality, the talent is there, so if he keeps working, keeps working hard for himself, he will be okay", Robben added.
