Steve Evans has joked about David Moyes being linked with taking his job at Leeds United, saying he would have thought a manager who had won more games would be suggested.

It has been claimed that should Leeds be taken over, former Everton boss Moyes could be handed the reins and Evans shown the door.

Moyes is unemployed following his sacking by Spanish side Real Sociedad earlier this month, after a poor spell in La Liga.

At a press conference today, Evans was asked about Moyes being linked with taking his job at Leeds.

And the Scot joked back: "I thought the newspapers would have run with a coach that had won a lot of games."

Evans continued: "Listen, I've got the greatest respect for David. I think when you've managed at Everton, get attracted to Manchester United and go out of the country…I've got the greatest respect."

But the Leeds boss, who was appointed to the role in October after the sacking of Uwe Rosler, says he is determined to only think about what he can control. He also stressed Leeds supremo Massimo Cellino has promised him job security while he remains in control.

"I can only manage the controllables, if that makes sense. So I can only manage what's in my remit, I can't make any decisions on if the ownership here changes what happens.

"All I know is I've been told by the owner that as long as he remains in control of this football club I'm the manager. And I direct the football strategy", he added.

Moyes has now been sacked from his last two jobs, lasting less than a year at Manchester United, and just around a year with Real Sociedad.

Evans meanwhile is under contract with Leeds until the end of the season and took the job at Elland Road himself as a free agent, having left Rotherham United in September.
