Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that he has given Bastian Schweinsteiger a holiday ahead of his side’s Premier League fixture with Sunderland tomorrow.

The German international, who joined the Red Devils from Bayern Munich in the summer, has been struggling with a knee injury he picked up in January.

Van Gaal explained that Schweinsteiger is yet to shake off his injury problems and hence he decided to award the midfielder a holiday.

However, the Dutchman confirmed that long-term absentees Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are close to returning to action.

"I cannot say Bastian is returning in two weeks", Van Gaal told MUTV.

"I have given him a holiday. There is light at the end of the tunnel for Rojo and Valencia – they are coming back and I hope to have them as soon as possible."

Van Gaal went on to add that Phil Jones, Adnan Januzaj and Guillermo Varela will play no part against Sunderland after the trio picked up injuries while playing for the Under-21s on Monday.

"They're not nasty injuries but I have to give them time to recover", he continued.

Manchester United, who drew 1-1 with Chelsea last weekend, are currently fifth in the Premier League with 41 points from 25 games, six adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.
