Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge has stressed that Liverpool’s 6-0 win over Aston Villa was more important than him scoring.

The England international opened the scoring for Liverpool as the Reds piled in five more goals to hand out a thrashing to Aston Villa at Villa Park and move up to eighth in the league table.

Despite his undoubted talent as a goalscorer, the forward has been struggling with fitness issues over the last season-and-half and has missed more games than he has played for the Reds during the period.

And so his goal at Villa Park was important for the Reds as they need an in-form and fit Sturridge as an answer to their recent goalscoring woes, but the England striker feels differently.

The forward admits that getting back his scoring touch is always nice for a striker, but the team’s win was more important as he feels that they need to build some confidence ahead of the last few months of the season.

Sturridge told Sky Sports after the final whistle: “It’s great, but it’s more important that the team wins the game.

“It’s more important to help, whether it’s assists, goals or making runs. It’s just important to help the team win games – that’s all that matters.

“I’ve been watching from the sidelines and we have been unlucky in recent games.

"It was great to get the result today and to score so many goals. It gives us confidence for future games.”

James Milner, Emre Can, Divock Origi, Nathaniel Clyne and Kolo Toure were the other scorers for Liverpool.
