Former Liverpool midfielder Nigel Spackman feels the Merseyside giants need to play a strong team to beat Augsburg in the Europa League Round of 32 return leg at Anfield next week.

The Reds failed to return home with an away goal in their kitty, following their goalless draw in the first leg in Augsburg last night.

Liverpool now have to defeat the German team at Anfield to progress to the next round of the continental competition.

While Jurgen Klopp’s team have a free weekend, owing to their elimination from the FA Cup, Augsburg have a vital Bundesliga clash with Hannover on Sunday.

And Spackman, who admitted that Liverpool are under a bit of pressure due to the lack of an away goal, wants the Premier League side to play a strong team comprising of Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge amongst others for the second leg on Thursday.

“Well, that’s the problem in European games, when you go away from home and it's 0-0; you think it’s a decent result, but nowadays where teams can come and hurt you, take one chance get one up, then you have to obviously score twice to win the tie”, he said on LFC TV, assessing the game after the final whistle.

“So there’s pressure, but they didn’t really show me enough tonight that they will come to Anfield full of confidence.

“They have a big game against Hannover at the weekend, but we have got a rest in the weekend.

“So again, with a bit of training, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho and all those boys getting fitness under their belts and being ready for the game next week because we have to play a strong team to beat them next week.”

After the return leg at Anfield on Thursday, Liverpool will take on Manchester City in the League Cup final three days later.
