Former Liverpool defender Phil Babb feels Augsburg should not have conceded a penalty in their 1-0 loss in the Europa League Round of 32 second leg clash at Anfield last night.

The Reds, who were held to a goalless draw in the first leg in Germany last week, were awarded a penalty by referee Clement Turpin in the third minute at Anfield after observing a handball by Dominik Kohr.

James Milner coolly scored from the resultant spot-kick, which ultimately became the deciding factor in the tie.

And Babb, who played for Liverpool between 1994 and 2000, is of the opinion that Augsburg were on the receiving end of a harsh decision.

“It was such a harsh decision from the referee so early on in the game”, he told LFC TV, while analysing the game afterwards.

“He didn’t give himself any time to think about it, to assess the situation, he just saw ball to hand and gave the penalty.

“Fortuitously for us, we will accept all gifts and it got us through to the next round of the cup.”

Liverpool, who have now managed to keep a clean sheet in their last three games in all competitions, will next face Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

The Anfield outfit’s last piece of silverware also came in the form of the League Cup in 2012.
