Nathaniel Clyne has insisted that Liverpool owe Manchester United from the Premier League defeats this season, ahead of his side’s Europa League Round of 16 first leg clash against the Red Devils at Anfield on Thursday.

The Reds, who edged out German side Augsburg 1-0 on aggregate in the previous round of the Europa League, were defeated both home and away in the league by Manchester United in the present campaign.

While Liverpool were thrashed 3-1 at Old Trafford in November, Louis van Gaal’s team beat the Merseyside giants 1-0 in the corresponding fixture at Anfield in January.

And Clyne, who explained that his side have learnt from those losses against their arch-rivals, stated that Liverpool want to “put things right” versus Manchester United in the continental competition.

"Everyone’s excited. Everyone loves to play European football so it’s going to be exciting up against our rivals United", he told the club’s official site.

"I think we owe them from the Premier League games, which we probably should have got more out of.

"But we have time now to put things right and [make sure we] progress through the cup.

"We’ve [learned to] just keep fighting to the end. We know we can create chances and if we’re solid in defence we can stop their attack.

"Hopefully we can get the goals and get a good result going into the second leg [it’ll help us] push through to the next round."

Liverpool, who have managed to win their last three Premier League games, are currently a spot and three points behind fifth-placed Manchester United with a game in hand.
