Mark Hughes has indicated that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s refusal to shake his hand following a 2-2 draw at Stoke City last weekend was blown out of proportion by the club’s media department.

In a tough game that saw Manchester United drop their first points of the season, the two managers came into conflict on the touchline and Mourinho ignored shaking Hughes’ hand after the game despite greeting each member of Stoke’s coaching staff.

Mourinho also didn’t respond to questions on his refusal to greet the Stoke manager after the game and there were suggestions that Hughes was trying to get the Manchester United boss sent off.

The Stoke manager feels the whole situation was blown out of proportion by Manchester United briefing the media after the game and believes it did not help Mourinho’s cause.

Hughes said in a press conference: "Maybe after the game the media department [at] Manchester United switched to full mode and got involved.
