The 22-year-old defender’s contract with Hamburg was due to run out at the end of the season and made him a target for several clubs.

Premier League side Leeds were tracking Ambrosius with a view to signing him on a free transfer in the summer, while Scottish giants Celtic have also been linked with a move for the defender.

However, the Germany Under-21s international put pen to paper on a new contract with Hamburg last month, handing Celtic and Leeds a severe blow.

Lifting the lid on why he decided to stay at Hamburg, Ambrosius explained that he did not consider a transfer as he is keen to help the team earn promotion to the Bundesliga, which he considers to be a personal goal.

A move was out of the question for me“, Ambrosius told German magazine Sport Bild.

Promotion with HSV would make my dream come true in my hometown of Hamburg.

“That’s my big goal.

Though Ambrosius has signed a new deal with Hamburg, it remains to be seen if Celtic or Leeds will go in to try to turn his head in the summer window.
