The 21-year-old joined League One club Wigan on loan until the end of the season from Premier League club Newcastle during the recently concluded transfer window.

Watts, who spent last season with Plymouth Argyle, has already made a good impression with the Latics, helping the side to four wins in five starts in the league.

The centre-back, though, has admitted that things are not always going well before lifting the lid on how Newcastle legend and loan manager Ameobi is helping him during his spell at Wigan.

Watts pointed out how Ameobi played at the highest level for several years during his playing career and went on to reveal that the Nigerian is often on the phone with him and giving him advice.

Shola is good in terms of keeping in contact“, Watts told Chronicle Live.

He’s played at the highest level for years and years so we have great chats.

It’s not always when it’s going well; when it’s maybe not, he’s always on the phone and dropping lines in with some great pieces of advice.

Having previously spent time on loan at Stevenage, Mansfield Town and Plymouth, Watts has been working with Ameobi for some time and will be hopeful of building on the relationship over the course of his stint with Wigan.
