Having roped in right-back Kieran Trippier and striker Chris Wood to his squad this month, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is now keen on bringing in a centre-back, which he has identified as top priority.

The Magpies are trying to strike a deal with a number of centre-halves but Sevilla’s Carlos has emerged as their top target.

Newcastle have already seen the La Liga giants knock back multiple offers from them for the defender, with their latest proposal being €30m.

However, the Tyneside giants will have to double what they are currently offering Sevilla to snare away Carlos.

Sevilla have included a release clause in Carlos’ contract for €85m and although they are not looking for a fee around that amount, they want significantly more than Newcastle are currently offering.

The defender is understood to be open to joining Newcastle, who have offered him a lucrative contract proposal, which would see him earn three times what he is currently earning in Spain.

Sevilla though consider Carlos as a key part of their squad and are reluctant to let him ago, unless Newcastle are prepared to meet their demands.

The Magpies want to have Carlos in their squad for the weekend’s clash against Leeds United and it remains to be seen whether they can get a deal over the line for him.
