Chambers was out of contract at Arsenal in the summer and was expected to depart the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer then.

His exit has been brought forward though and he has completed a move to Aston Villa, putting pen to paper to a three-and-a-half year contract at Villa Park.

Aston Villa are not paying a fee for Chambers now, but there may be money for Arsenal down the line.

It is claimed that with add-ons in the deal, along with the wages being saved, Chambers going to Aston Villa may be worth up to £2m for Arsenal.

The departure could allow Gunners boss Mikel Arteta more wiggle room in the transfer market.

Arteta is looking to add a midfielder to his squad and Arsenal have been keen on landing Arthur from Juventus on loan.

Chambers marks another Aston Villa signing of this month’s transfer window after the arrivals of Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho.
