The 26-year-old spent the latter half of last season on loan at Newcastle and played in every game he was available for.

Eddie Howe had high praise for him but Newcastle took some time before agreeing to take up the option to sign him on a permanent deal.

The club considered bringing in a more progressive left-back but they have ultimately decided to go ahead and sign Targett.

It has been claimed that the defender has now completed his medical at Newcastle today ahead of joining the club on a permanent deal.

Newcastle will now look to complete the formalities of the transfer and get the deal over the line.

Targett will sign a contract with Newcastle and the club will pay around £12m to Aston Villa as part of the agreement.

The 26-year-old will soon become the club’s first signing of the summer transfer window as Howe looks to kick off a spending spree.
