The centre-back’s future at Mainz is under the scanner as he is linked with a move away from the club in the ongoing window, although he has been a key player for them since his arrival in the summer of 2018.

Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest are claimed to have touched base with the Bundesliga outfit over a summer swoop for Niakhate.

However, Mainz sporting director Heidel has insisted that it has been quiet at the club’s base regarding Niakhate’s future, despite claims that he has attracted strong interest from elsewhere

But Heidel stressed that for Niakhate’s agent it is likely to be a whole another story, as he believes the player’s entourage are in talks with a lot of clubs interested in acquiring his services, although it has not translated into official contact with Mainz from any interested parties yet.

“Yes, it’s quiet here [at Mainz]”, Heidel was quoted as saying by German daily Bild, while addressing the transfer chatter surrounding Niakhate.

“I suspect that it’s not so quiet for Moussa’s agent.”

It remains to be seen whether Nottingham Forest will approach Mainz with an offer for Niakhate, who has entered the final year of his contract at the German outfit.
