The Magpies are still keen on reinforcing their attack in the ongoing window, having failed to land any of their top targets.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe wants to bring in cover for first choice hitman Callum Wilson and the Magpies have now identified Bordeaux star Mara as a target.

But the Tyneside giants are facing competition for Mara’s signature as Premier League rivals Leeds are also interested in snapping him up.

Whites boss Jesse Marsch wants to add a striker to his ranks to provide support and competition for Patrick Bamford and it has been claimed that Mara is an option for the Yorkshire club.

Persuading the player to move may not be easy for interested sides though and, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, Newcastle, while determined to beat off competition for the 19-year-old, are struggling to convince him to join them in the ongoing window.

Bordeaux are yet to receive any concrete offers for Mara, who is suggested to have price tag on his head in the €10m range.

In addition to Leeds and Newcastle, top flight rivals Aston Villa are also keen on a move for the hitman.

Bordeaux were relegated last season and may struggle to keep hold of Mara.
